The Canadian passport remains one of the most powerful in the world

The 2026 Henley Passport Index has ranked Canada no. 7 for holding one of the world’s strongest passports.

Henley & Partners is a global citizenship and residence advisory firm. It’s Index generates rankings based on how many places citizens can travel without needing a visa before or upon arrival.

It analyzes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations to determine the level of freedom to travel and move around the world different countries are granted.

The Henley Passport Index has conducted this research for twenty years. It is a widely recognized benchmark for global travel accessibility.

It depends on data from the International Air Transport Association and ever-changing visa policies worldwide.

Canada shares seventh place

In 2026, the Canadian passport holders can travel to 182 destinations without needing a prior visa. Canada is tied in seventh place with a few other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Slovakia in seventh place.

Once again, Singapore sits at number 1, with its citizens able to visit 192 destinations visa-free. Japan and South Korea are second, while several European countries including Sweden. France and Germany follow closely behind.

Over the years, Canada has bounced between ranks fluctuating positions. It has landed comfortably at 7th place since 2024 after sitting at 9th in 2021, 2011 and 2010.

The Canadian passport’s highest rank was second place in 2014.

Passports privilege & prices

Unfortunately, the privilege of holding a powerful passport is coming at a price in Canada. Passports prices are increasing by 2.7% and it appears this pattern will continue later in the year.
